One of the most picturesque regions
along our coastal routes is the Garden Route stretching from Still Bay in the west to
Plettenberg Bay in the east. This region bordered on the north by magnificent mountain
ranges is spectacular for its indigenous forest and flora, its wildlife and scenery. The
rugged coastline of cliffs and bays also is graced by white sandy beaches and coves,
lakes, lagoons and wide flowing rivers. The ocean, affected by the warm Indian currents,
abounds in marine life and is a paradise for watersports, diving, fishing, surfing and
boating. There are numerous resorts along the coastline offering services for every need.
Accommodation varies from upmarket hotels, chalets and cottages to caravan and camping
parks and all offer recreation for every taste.
The Garden Route has an impressive
tourism infrastucture and also has a deep cultural and historical background. There are
many places of interest to visit along this magnificent coastline. Important resorts and
towns worth visiting include Albertinia, an eco-tourist's dream, a town with an old world
atmosphere; George, nestling below the magnificent Outeniqua mountains, the cultural
centre of Hartenbos; Mossel Bay, a holiday resort with an interesting history; Plettenberg
Bay, an ideal resort on a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains and engulfed by indigenous
forests; Knysna, in the heart of the Garden Route, rich in history and offering relaxation
and many arts and crafts; Still Bay, popular for fishing and boating; Wilderness and
Sedgefield, peaceful areas for spellbinding beauty and relaxation. The motto on the coat
of arms for Knysna sums up this beautiful region - "Beautiful Land, - a Gift of
God".
