North
of Durban along the N2 are numerous resorts with golden beaches, warm tropical
blue seas, coral reefs, bays and estuaries to delight anglers and divers.
Immediately north of Durban is the upmarket resort of Umhlanga Rocks with
beautiful beaches, walkways and an interesting dune forest in the lagoon
Nature Reserve. Ballito, Shako's Rock, and Salt Rock are resorts offering
protected beaches, tidal pools and excellent fishing. Further north at
Mtinzini is the Umlazi Nature Reserve with its coastal dunes, swamps and
beautiful raffia palms. Richards Bay is a popular angling resort and the
nature reserve is prolific with birdlife.

North
of Richards Bay the Mfolozi river flows into a large lake of 36,000 hectares.
This is the world renown St Lucia lake and is a paradise for nature lovers,
large shoals of Salmon (Kob), Breamm, Mullet and Grunte enter the estuary
followed by Sharks and game fish. Hippo and crocodile inhabit the pools
and river mouths. Accommodation is available and guided tours can be arranged.

Due
South of St Lucia the Mapelane Reserve has the highest forested dunes in
the world. To the West of St Lucia the Mfolozi Game reserve covers 47,00
hectares of prime wilderness area, and is famous for the conservation of
the White Rhino. At the northern limit of the St Lucia Reserve is the Sodwana
Bay National Park, a paradise for anglers and divers.
